Is it legal for a school police officer to demand a myspace password?

I was at school and they set up a meeting with my parents and other parents about drug talk on myspace. They made packets of everything people said and gave them to each parent even when it didnt involve them. At the end the cop had us write down our emails and passwords (one girl refused) and i deleted my account after that. Im just wondering is it legal how they handled it ?

If the parents gave permission, then it was legal.

Without parental permission, it was probably not legal.

But why am I not surprised. It appears again that the public schools are more interested in petty matters such as myspace activities than education.

And why am I also not surprised that major universities are soliciting home-schooled kids now. Seems the home-schooled kids are learning more and attaining better study habits --- and nowadays they have sports programmes for home-schoolers, and they even use the big universities' physics and chemistry labs.

Doesn't sound legal. I certainly would've refused.

And I agree, the girl who said no gets my admiration.

no this is illegal and defiantly a republican tactic.

Not without a warrant.

However, if they have a warrant, they can make you.

Also, your parents have the right to those emails and passwords, whether you like it or not.

They can certainly ask, and you can certainly say no. MAD props to the girl who did.

not if all they are doing is fishing for problems...any information they achieve would be useless in court cause of the nature the info was attained....always must be careful of giving away our civil liberties...govt never know when to stop.

No the police does nt have any rights to your account unless there is a court order. If they need to get into it and it is up to you to allow them access to it, with out the password; if you choose not to, then they have to get a court order and have to go thru Myspace to access your account. Other wise that could be considered a invasion of privacy if they look at your account and you dont have any knowledge.

Hell no, that is not legal. They have no right to your personal property with a legal warrant. I would not give them anything!
